Derolez, Valerie; Bec, Béatrice; Grillas, Patrice; Sanchez, Ana Elena; Raimbault, Patrick.
In the context of WFD implementation on Mediterranean lagoons, work has been carried out since 2010 by Ifremer, Tour du Valat and IRSTEA (Onema and AERM & C fundings), to assess the relevance of macrophytes and macrofauna indicators for oligohaline and mesohaline lagoons (mean salinity <18 PSU). The question of the relevance of indicator metrics and thresholds for the "phytoplankton" biological quality element also arises, especially due to the confined nature of olgo-mesohaline lagoons. The objective of this study is to characterize the abundance and composition of phytoplankton on 5 oligo and mesohaline lagoons of the French Mediterranean coast (Scamandre, Crey, Charnier, Bolmon and Grand Palun). Analyses of accessory pigments (chlorophyll and...

Hoplosternum Uttorale (Hancock, 1828) is an abundant species in the lagoons of the upper Paraná river floodplain. This species was sampled in Patos and Guaraná lagoons in the flood period (November/92-May/93) and low water period (June-October/93). To analyse food contents in the diet were analysed stomach of 91 adults. Twenty seven food items were recorded, among them, Testaceae, Nematoda, microcrustaceans, quironomids and organic detritus were predominant. These items allows to characterize the species as bentivore. To study feeding activity were analized 565 adults stomach contents. Food intake was more intense during flooding. Considering diel variation, the species started to eat during dusk, increasing during night, stopping to eat during daytime.

distribution of phosphorus fractions and some of heavy metals in surface sediments of burullus lagoon and adjacent mediterranean sea OceanDocs
Radwan, A.M.; Khalil, M.K.; El-Moselhy, K.M..
Twelve samples were collected from the surface sediments of lagoon and adjacent Mediterranean Sea. Samples were analyzed for grain size, total organic carbon (TOC), total carbonate (CaCO3), various forms of phosphorus and heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Ni, Co, Cd and Pb). The results indicated that the sediments were composed of sand, silt and clay enriched with carbonate (1.95 – 34.1%) and total organic carbon (0.06 and 3.62%). The total-P content ranged between 58 and 1186 μg/g, and the fraction associated with apatite minerals (PHCl) was the dominant (it constitutes about 50 – 73% of TP) implying that it was the main storage of phosphate. The various P phases demonstrated significant positive correlation with mean size, silt, clay, TOC, CaCO3 and TP,...

Castaings, Jerome.
The sedimentary evolution of coastal lagoons is a complex phenomenon involving both short term extreme processes (floods, storms) and long term processes (mean sea level variations, climate change). If general mechanisms of these phenomena are well known, their spatial and temporal variability makes them difficult to assess at the local scale. The diversity of lagoonal environments and human influence makes this even more risky. I have focussed this study on the case of a Mediterranean lagoon system : “Palavasian lagoons, Or lagoon, and Rhône-Sète waterway” which is located in the Gulf of Lion (South of France). A ultidisciplinary approach was used to assess sediment dynamics on multiple time scales. An average filling rate of 1.3 mm.year-1 over the two...

Malissen, M.o.; Lasserre, P..
In lagoons and estuarine ecosystems, the benthic microflora contributes considerably to the primary production of the area and consists largely of diatoms Monthly samplings have been made from December 1976 to March 1978 in a shallow station characterized by the lack of macrophytes. Two sets of monthly samplings were made allowing in theone hand a qualitative analysis and on the other hand a quantitative study by cellular counts. The diatom populations show a cyclic evolution with two peaks : one in February 1977 and the other in September 1977. This cycle is confirmed by the diversity and dominance analysis. Seasonal evolution is characterized by the dominance of one or more species with well marked succession of dominant species (Nitzschia Navicula et...

First records of Freshwater Bivalves of Ilha Grande National Park, Paraná, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Ragonha,Flávio Henrique; Pinha,Gisele Daiane; Petsch,Danielle Katharine; Mansur,Maria Cristina Dreher; Takeda,Alice Michiyo.
The Ilha Grande National Park, Paraná, Brazil, is located in the Upper Paraná River and has characteristics typical of a floodplains. This protected area includes lagoons connected and disconnected to the Paraná River, although the latter also connect during periods of high water level, thus composing a heterogeneous group of lacustrine environments. The enormous potential the flora and fauna diversities are still little known to the region, as can be seen through benthic invertebrates, inclunding bivalves mollusks. The granulometric composition of these floodplain lagoons was formed mainly by mud and very fine sand. Furthermore, organic matter composition was predominantly of fine particulate. The other abiotic factors differed from lagoons located within...

Romdhane, M.S.; Ben Rejeb-Jenhani, A..

Impact of Contrasted Weather Conditions on CDOM Absorption/Fluorescence and Biogeochemistry in the Eastern Lagoon of New Caledonia ArchiMer
Dupouy, Cécile; Röttgers, Rüdiger; Tedetti, Marc; Frouin, Robert; Lantoine, François; Rodier, Martine; Martias, Chloe; Goutx, Madeleine.
New Caledonia (Southwest Pacific), like all tropical Pacific Island countries, is impacted by weather events, climate change, and local anthropogenic forcing. Strong erosion of particles and dissolved organic matter (DOM) from ultramafic rocks, associated with trace metals dissemination (i.e., nickel, manganese and cobalt), potentially affects lagoon waters and coral reefs surrounding the main island. The CALIOPE (CALedonian Inherent Optical PropErties) cruises were performed along the Eastern Lagoon of New Caledonia (ELNC) (400 km, 13 transects from Bay to open ocean, 51 stations) during contrasted meteorological conditions: a dry period (October 2011), a windy situation (March 2014), and a strong rainy event (March 2016). Impact of macroalgal dredging on dystrophic crises and phototrophic bacterial blooms (red waters) in a brackish coastal lagoon ArchiMer
Guyoneaud, R; De Wit, R; Matheron, R; Caumette, P.
The Prevost lagoon (Mediterranean coast, France), was subject to annual dystrophic crises caused by the biodegradation of opportunistic macroalgae (Ulva lactuca) in the past. These crises result in anoxic waters with subsequent blooms of Purple Sulphur Bacteria (red waters) which, by oxidizing sulphide, contribute to the reestablishment of oxic conditions in the water column. Mechanical dredging of the macroalgal biomass has been carried out in the lagoon since 1991 with the aim of preventing the ecological and economic disturbances caused by such crises. Dredging began just before the phototrophic bloom when the water was already hypoxic (O-2 = 0.7 mg . L-1) and contained sulphilde (H2S = 7.3 mg . L-1) and purple patches of phototrophic bacteria...

Influence of feeding plasticity on the fitness of small Neotropical characids Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Fiori,Leandro Fabrício; Alves,Gustavo Henrique Zaia; Hahn,Norma Segatti; Benedito,Evanilde.
Abstract This study investigated the diet of four characids [Hyphessobrycon eques (Steindachner, 1882), Odontostilbe pequira (Steindachner, 1882), Psellogrammus kennedyi (Eigenmann, 1903) and Serrapinnus calliurus (Boulenger, 1900) ] coexisting in two lagoons and checked for possible spatial differences and the influence on population fitness. The main goal was check if these species show better fitness according to the nutritional value of the food resource consumed. In this way, it is expected that the species show improved nutritional conditions (evidenced by the relative condition factor) when foraging for items of animal origin, and the reverse is expected when consuming items of plant origin and detritus. Sampling was conducted in August 2011. The...

Influence of lagoons size and prey availability on the wading birds (Ciconiiformes) in the upper Paraná river floodplain, Brazil BABT
Gimenes,Márcio Rodrigo; Anjos,Luiz dos.
The influence of lagoons size and prey availability on the Ciconiiformes in the upper Paraná river floodplain, Brazil, were analysed. The Ciconiiformes census was conducted quarterly in 2002, simultaneously to the fish census (gill nets and seining nets). There was strong relationship between the lagoons size and birds abundance, but modest relationship of lagoons size with the birds diversity and number of species. The presence of Ciconiiformes in the lagoons was better predicted by the fish density in seining nets than by the fish capture by unit of effort in gill nets. Except in the flood, there was strong relationship between the fishes density and birds relative abundance, and more modest relationship of the fishes density with birds diversity and...

Major Fishes of West African Coastal Waters and Their Morphological Characterization, with Emphasis on Sarotherodon melanotheron Teleostei, Cichlidae) OceanDocs
Falk, T.M.; Teugels, G.G..
The West African coastal zone is rich in estuaries and lagoons. Estuaries are abundant in the area from the mouth of Senegal to Guinea (e.g., Sine Saloum, Casamance); lagoons are generally present from Cote d'Ivoire to the Niger Delta in Nigeria (e.g., Ebrie Lagoon, Porto Novo Lagoon, Lagos Lagoon). Because of their important diversity, it is difficult to give their physical and biological definitions. They are all, however, characterized by a typical and rich fish species composition

Castel, J.; Lasserre, P..
Monthly sampling for a 2-year period allowed comparisons between the communities of meiofauna living in fish ponds ("reservoirs a poissons de Certes") and those inhabiting a contiguous tidal pool ("lac de tonne"). Nematods and copepods constitute the bulk of the meiofaunal populations. The community structure of copepods is considered in detail. The communities of copepods are clearly separated between the two areas. In terms of abundance, diversity and species persistence, the meiofauna is more stable in the intertidal pool than in the fish ponds. When the seasons are well marked, the community structure of the copepods in the fish ponds is nearly equilibrated in spring, with a maximum of diversity in May-June. During high eutrophication periods, in...

Numeration, biomass, distribution within time, some physiological characters and a taxonomical outline, with a standardized micro method, of aerobic hétérotrophie bacteria isolated from sediments an waters, from fishponds of "Domaine de Certes" (Arcachon) from june 1977 to may 1978 are described. Number of hétérotrophie bacteria evolved in a significant way, according to seasons, and bacterial biomass is higher in the sediments than in the waters. Metabolic or physiological differences (proteolysis, denitrification) appeared among populations due to the origin of sediments. Moreover the qualitative study pointed out taxonomical units as Bacillus associated to seasons, or Agrobacterium associated to vegetable detritical sediments.

Gaudy, R; Pagano, M.
The zooplankton of an eutrophic brackish lagoon (Etang de Berre), near Marseille (France) was studied during an annual cycle. It was characterized by large populations of a pelagic copepod (Acartia tonsa ). Grazing on natural particles by this species was investigated. Adults were able to use an extended range of particle sizes, but showed selectivity for particles concentration was observed (14 mu m). Temperature and particles concentration appear to modify the selectivity behavior. Juvenile stages could also catch particles of various size but did not show the same selectivity for the peak particles as adults. Daily food ration was high comparatively to open-sea copepods. Taking into account several results obtained on food ration, egg production and...
